We
are the Georgia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), a
Congressionally chartered, federally supported, non-profit corporation that
serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the US Air Force. We are a
volunteer organization with an aviation-minded membership that includes people
from all backgrounds, lifestyles, and occupations.
A
not-for-profit organization, the Civil Air Patrol performs a variety of varied
and interesting missions to aid our nation and its citizens.
We
have three types of squadrons: senior squadrons (focused primarily upon
emergency services), cadet squadrons (focused upon
cadet programs) and composite squadrons (who combine both elements). Our
state-wide Wing is geographically divided into four "Groups" across the state.
The Georgia Wing
conducts
search and rescue missions for lost aircraft and persons- and always on a volunteer basis. We have an
award-winning cadet program that promotes
self-initiative, discipline, leadership and personal growth and development.
The Georgia
Wing has recently been tasked with homeland
security and courier service missions and performs non-auxiliary missions
for governmental and private agencies, such as local emergency management
agencies, local law enforcement and the
American Red Cross. We work closely with the Georgia Emergency Management
Agency (GEMA). As disaster recovery volunteers we are often at the
forefront helping Federal, state and local disaster agencies with a range of
dedicated and highly trained volunteers from across the country.
The Georgia Wing provides help to other states during national
disasters, such as providing extensive photo recon during the 2010 Gulf Oil
Spill as well as national disasters across our region. CAP units from
across the state of Georgia pitch in to help in the aftermath of hurricanes,
tornadoes and flooding. We are often called upon to assist in the
transport of human tissue or blood, provide photo reconnaissance or as well as
provide auxiliary support for the US Air Force.
Founded just prior
to World War II in 1941, our volunteer pilots, ground crews and thousands of
other volunteers across Georgia and across the nation follow our motto: "Semper
Vigilans" (Always Vigilant).
